We've written proudly in recent weeks about a small cadre of firefighters on a nationwide bicycle trek to commemorate the September 11, 2001 attacks on our nation.

Since beginning their journey in Los Angeles on July 24, these participants in the Ride For 9-11 have been unfazed by rain, triple-digit heat and hail, adhering strictly to a daunting schedule and course that will bring them to New York City in time for the tenth anniversary of that dark day.

With focus, pride and perseverance, they have kept on-course, until today...

Joplin, Missouri was not one of the group's original stops - but in the words of rider Jim Prabhu, an LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic:

"We've made a stop here in Joplin, Missouri in light of what happened here several months ago. We wanted to make sure that we paid our respect and saw it first hand, what exactly occurred."

We thank Jim and all participants in the Ride For 9-11, not only for their charitable effort in raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project and the Dennis Leary Firefighter Foundation, but also for serving as emissaries of Los Angeles and the Fire Service in extending sympathies to the people of Joplin.

As a rule, members of your Los Angeles Fire Department don't carry much money with them while on duty.

This weekend however, that rule may be bent just a little, as the men and women of LAFD make room to pay for a true passion. We're not talking about steak or chocolate cake - we're talking lemonade. But not just any lemonade...

During Lemonade Days 2011, Neighborhood Firefighters in Los Angeles will be on the lookout for an Alex's Lemonade Stand. With our soft spot for kids, especially those battling severe illness, we've been deeply moved by Alex's story, and pledge to do our part in fighting childhood cancer, one cup at a time.

We hope you'll join us in seeking, hosting or donating to an Alex's Lemonade Stand near you!

Click to Fill The Boot!On April 20-22, 2011, the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department will participate in a 'Fill-The-Boot' fundraising campaign to support the fight against Muscular Dystrophy.

Though Los Angeles Firefighters have long supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), this is only the sixth year that LAFD personnel in uniform have been allowed to fundraise for this established charity.

Thanks to an agreement with United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) - IAFF Local 112, the Fire Department is permitting a handful of uniformed Firefighters to join logo-clad MDA volunteers at twenty-six specific locations across our City from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday only.

View a Larger Map (you can also click, grab and zoom the map above!)

The uniformed Firefighters at these sites will be in their normal response district and remain available for immediate dispatch. Joining them will be off-duty colleagues wearing MDA 'Fill-The-Boot' logo attire, as well as MDA volunteers.

Firefighters look forward to thanking Los Angeles residents for their generous donations, which will be collected in authentic Firefighter turnout boots. MDA volunteers will remain on hand to manage donations and answer questions.

To assure motorist and pedestrian safety, Los Angeles Firefighters will remain away from moving vehicles and largely rely on the public to approach them with donations.

Those who cannot make it to one of the locations listed, can click on the boot image above to make a secure on-line donation.

In the interest of efficiency and safety, donations CANNOT be accepted at Neighborhood Fire Stations, and there will be NO Firefighters soliciting door to door anywhere in our City!

Please join us in giving generously this week in support of the worldwide research efforts of MDA, as this charitable organization strives to eradicate neuromuscular disease. To learn more, call 1-888-HELP-MDA or visit:

The Los Angeles Fire Department is honored to welcome the 2011 'Code 3 for a Cure', as they return from their mission of honor and hope across America remembering those firefighters who have succumbed to cancer and paved the way for better safety equipment and safety procedures used by today’s firefighters.

This Foundation has travelled across the country stopping at various fire departments, collecting the names of fallen firefighters who have died from cancer.  Those names will be read at this ceremony honoring our fallen brothers and sisters, and a fire bell mounted on the fire engine will toll for each name read.

Take just one hour and join the LAFD in honoring those Firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and help others in need.
Speakers:
Chief Tonya L. Hoover, Acting California State Fire Marshal
Assistant Chief Mark Stormes, Assistant Fire Marshal, LAFD

Some of you ask why members of the Los Angeles Fire Department are so passionate - some say emotional, about our Spark of Love Toy Drive.

Please wonder no more...

Toy Drives: It’s Not Too Late!
By Kevin Ott
blogging.la

Here’s my favorite personal Christmas story: One year when I was very young, I got a package of cheap off-brand glow-in-the-dark action figures. They had no faces and chintzy vinyl capes. For reasons I still can’t explain, I loved these guys — I played with them until their capes frayed and their joints (I think there was a grand total of, like, four on each figure) loosened.

Years later, when I was out of college, my single mom mentioned to me that her hardest Christmas was the one where she had just lost her job and was forced to go on welfare. She hadn’t been able to afford Christmas presents for me, so as soon as she got her first welfare check she went directly to the toy store and made the entire thing stretch as far as she could. That was the year she got me the glow-in-the-dark action figures. I don’t think she ever knew that I loved them so much.

So why am I telling you this? Because there are still plenty of kids out there whose parents can’t even afford the cheapest plastic aliens, and that’s where we come in. There are tons of toy drives and holiday charity events going on all around LA...

...Run by the LAFD, the Spark of Love toy drive collects new, unwrapped toys or sports equipment at every fire station in Los Angeles. Click here to find your local firehouse.

As your firefighters, we often see things we don't want to talk about. On other days, we experience things we just can't find the words for.

Thank you Kevin, for so eloquently expressing the value of this well-run program. Though largely staffed by off-duty firefighters and their families, it is powered by the generosity of people just like you.

It's not too late to make the magic happen!

For more information, please call the Spark of Love hotline...

(213) 626-2871
...toys will be gratefully accepted through New Years Day, but please don't wait!
